Remove AI Metadata and AI Detection from Image

An AI image metadata footprint is the embedded file data that records how an image was made or edited. For example, tool name, generation settings, edit history, dates, and source attribution. It lives in the file's metadata containers and always travels with the image.

Four types of metadata containers hold it. EXIF, IPTC, and XMP carry the older tags like software name, timestamps, and in some cases the prompt text itself.

C2PA is the latest container introduced for tagging any AI-related info. C2PA Content Credentials add a signed manifest that states the image's origin. It means it carries which AI image generator software was used to create the image.

Generators write these tags at save time. Adobe Firefly and DALL·E attach Content Credentials that declare the image as AI-generated. IPTC's digital source type field can carry the value trainedAlgorithmicMedia, a machine-readable label for synthetic media. Other tools simply stamp their own name into an XMP or EXIF field.

Platforms read those tags directly, and reading a label is not the same as judging a picture by eye. The metadata footprint is a written declaration inside the file.

AI detection is a guess made from the pixels. The two are independent: a hand-drawn illustration edited in a generative tool can carry AI tags, and a fully synthetic image can carry none.

The Home tool on this site strips those containers, so the download you get carries no tool name, prompt, history, or source AI label info. It does not alter the pixels.

A metadata-clean file can still be assessed by a pixel-level detector or an invisible watermark such as Google's SynthID, but for most day-to-day uses, like posting images on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X.com, and websites, metadata cleaning is good enough.

How do AI tools leave metadata footprints?

Many AI Image generators write C2PA provenance when you export the image from those websites.

C2PA is a common industry format to record that metadata. Visit c2pa.org for verifiable history of how a file was created or edited.

Each edit can add more tags. Different tools may append their own metadata with different AI info tags, so the file carries a longer history.

Common types of AI metadata tags and footprints

Different tools leave different tags. The table lists examples people often see; a given export may include more, less, or none of these fields.

Automatic1111 and ComfyUI workflows often store rich generation parameters (prompts, sampler settings, and related fields) in the file.

The C2PA standard is widely used for provenance records that travel with the file across tools.

Some sites read embedded provenance when it is present. That is separate from pixel-only detectors.

Not every tool writes the same tags, and some outputs carry little or no useful metadata.

Embedded metadata can expose how a file was made or edited. That affects privacy and how platforms label content.

Privacy and security

AI tools and editors may embed which platform you used, when you created or edited the file, and other process details.

Social apps can read those tags and show an AI-related label based on the file, not only on how the image looks.

How can these footprints affect privacy?

• Which AI or editing tools left tags in the file
• Creation or edit timestamps
• Possible account or workflow identifiers when a tool writes them
• Platform or software identification fields

That matters if you care who can see your tooling history on a shared file.

Many people never open the metadata panel, so the tags stay until something reads or cleans them.

Copyright and authorship signals

Metadata can record that a generative or AI-assisted tool touched the file. That is a technical signal, not a legal ruling about ownership. Local rules differ; this page does not give legal advice.

Platform labels and authenticity

Platforms may label posts when they find AI-related provenance in the upload. Meta describes using C2PA and IPTC markers for that purpose (Meta, 6 February 2024).

Those systems look for embedded signatures in the file. Cleaning metadata removes those particular signals; it does not change pixels or defeat pixel watermarks.

On this site, “AI generated” checks mean reading embedded metadata indicators (EXIF, IPTC, XMP, C2PA/JUMBF, PNG text chunks when present). Upload a file to see those tags. That is not pixel-level AI detection and does not prove authorship from pixels alone. You can still judge visible watermarks or odd visual artifacts by eye.

Manual inspection

On your computer, open the file properties (Windows) or Get Info / Preview inspector (Mac) and look at metadata fields.

Look for software, generator, history, or provenance fields that name an AI or generative tool.

Built-in OS viewers only show some tags. This site’s viewer is better for C2PA/JUMBF and related blocks when they exist.

Optional visual clues (human judgment, not this tool):

• Unnatural lighting or shadows
• Overly smooth or plastic-looking skin
• Repetitive patterns in backgrounds
• Asymmetrical faces or features
• Blurry or inconsistent fine detail

Hair and fabric can look too uniform compared with a real photo.

Newer models change these tells often. Visual clues are optional judgment, not a substitute for reading the file’s metadata.
